Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully – A Journey with Cancer and Beyond

Reviewed by Vicki Landes for Reader Views (1/08)

Nancy Manahan and Becky Bohan team up to write a beautiful tribute to the life of Manahan’s deceased sister-in-law in “Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully: A Journey with Cancer and Beyond.” The authors hope not only to remember their loved one in print but to share her extraordinary passage from unthinkable diagnosis to dignified death.

“Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully” is the touching story of Diane Manahan – wife, mother, grandmother, sister, colleague, and friend – and her deliberate pathway toward the unavoidable end of her life. Stricken with cancer, Diane received the short gift of remission before the disease returned with a vengeance and ultimately caused her death. Although countless families have had to endure such a painful ordeal, Diane’s story brings an enlightened hope and calming peace as she looks at her situation with an unusual perspective. To most, death is the ultimate unknown – terrifying and avoided in conversation. Instead of settling in this mindset, Diane chose to live and love each day to the fullest while openly communicating her final wishes on most of her burial and memorial services.

“Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully” is not only a deeply heartfelt story of a woman’s life but a guidebook for those facing similar situations and would like to intentionally leave behind a beautiful legacy. Both Diane’s story and the authors’ lessons from her life touch the soul and encourage the heart to see death as more than merely `the end.’ Manahan and Bohan write with such emotion and love that I found myself mourning Diane’s death but conversely, rejoicing in her conscious life. They perfectly capture this woman’s spirit with their style, one which brightly radiates from each page.

Since death in inevitable for everyone “Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully” is a book many adults will find of great interest, especially those having to watch a loved one suffer from a terminal illness. Further, those undergoing a disease themselves and wanting to approach their deaths with more purpose would also greatly benefit from reading this book. I found that the most profound aspect of Manahan and Bohan’s writing was that Diane – a non-violent person – didn’t view her treatments as a `fight,’ a `war’ going on between her medicine and the invading cells, or that she was a victim of cancer. Instead and more positively, she was simply living with cancer – a peaceful journey full of love and mature acceptance even during her conventional and complementary therapies.

“Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully” is probably the most profound book on death I’ve ever read. Manahan and Bohan present a beautiful story of their loved one while offering hope to others that may be facing similar circumstances. A life lesson for anyone wanting to leave a more powerful heritage behind, “Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully” tugs at the heartstrings, lifts the spirit, and pulls the conscious mind towards a more meaningful life and dignified ending.

Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully – A Journey with Cancer and Beyond Overview

When diagnosed with breast cancer, Diane Manahan decided to share her entire journey openly. A professor of nursing, married to a doctor trained in both conventional and holistic medicine, Diane integrated complementary therapies with orthodox cancer treatments. She enjoyed a full, vibrant life for the next five and a half years. This inspiring story describes her cancer years and extraordinary death at home, the care of her body by loved ones, and the family s powerful experience at the crematorium. The book ends with a glimpse of Diane s ongoing journey as friends tell of comforting lessons offered by her enduring spirit. A supplemental guidebook offers practical suggestions for dealing with a life-threatening illness or death.

Breast Ultrasound

The main reason I purchased this book was use it as a review before taking the Breast Ultrasound registry. The authors (Stavros/Rapp) are respected in their field, and I have attended their conference lectures. The overall size of the book was a bit intimidating at first (nearly 1000 pages). On the plus side, the images are outstanding. The image descriptions duplicate the text word-for-word, which really helps to cement the facts in your head. The chapters are formatted very logically, even if some of them are nearly 100 pages long. In my journey through the book I found only a couple of minor typographic/editing errors. If you are reading carefully, these won’t be a problem. This book is now firmly planted in my office as a reference. Oh, and by the way, I did pass the registry! What Causes Women to Have Breast Cancer?

Aug 27
2010

According to papers, news and internet, breast cancer is a disease that specially targets women irregardless of their age. It is also regarded as the world’s second lethal killer after cancer.

It usually occurs after women reached their 20s although in some cases, there are teenagers or even children getting it. Every year, there are millions of women around the world suffering from it given their frequent medical checkup statistics provided by hospitals.

The most common procedure recommended by doctors is mammogram. Mammogram is a treatment meant to examine their breasts for any symptoms of cancer. Symptoms such as mutation of cells within their breasts. An early detection will certainly help women to have it cured faster. If not, doctors will recommend various ways for them to avoid it.

So what causes women to have breast cancer?

There are several possibilities pertaining to this. Such as:

1. Women beginning their menstrual cycle too soon. The average age is 12. Yet some begin much earlier. Therefore their risk of getting it is much higher before they reach 30s.

2. Women beginning their menopause cycle too late. The average age is 50 and earlier. But for those starting beyond 50, their bodies will start to have adverse reaction since their hormones change too late.

3. Women eating foods with saturated fats and lacking nutrition. Lack of proper diet can also be a determining factor in them suffering from it. Without sufficient calcium and vitamins, their body loses the necessary resistance to sickness and becomes more prone to breakdown.

4. Women drinking alcohol, smoking or taking drugs excessively. However awkward it may sound, they will be inviting all the unknown germs to attack and infect their body cells simply through frequent use of alcohol, beer, cigarettes, drugs, medicine or even wine which they think they know a lot but really know nothing about.

5. Women with family history of breast cancer. If their sisters, mothers or grandmothers have breast cancer, there is a high possibility of them getting it too.

6. Women undergoing estrogen replacement therapy for various reasons. If they have been doing this for 10 years and more, the chances of them getting it are very high.

Whichever the possibility, breast cancer should not be taken lightly. An early checkup, consultation and detection from doctors will certainly help to manage or better still, avoid breast cancer. As to how to avoid and manage breast cancer, I will be covering that in my next article.

Breast Cancer Prevention

Aug 23
2010

Breast cancer is still a dreaded thought to many women. Most women know someone or certainly have heard of someone who has been diagnosed. There are many stories of women who have beaten the disease and, sadly, some who have succumbed. The good news is that research is continuing in trying to find a cure for all cancers including breast cancer. And there are new ways to treat the disease.

But the old saying that prevention is better than cure is certainly true. Sadly we still do not know what can definitely prevent the disease. We know of several factors which are relevant to the prevention of the disease and the main one of course is regular check-ups. Cancer can be beaten if caught at an early stage and this means constant screenings for breast cancer signs.

Diet, exercise and weight control are three important factors. The good thing about all three is that in almost every case, a woman can control her destiny. You can eat a well-balanced and wholesome diet, you can undertake sensible and regular exercise and you can do something about being overweight. For some it may not be as easy as for others but generally speaking, every woman can take charge of her diet, exercise and weight.

Anyone can develop cancer but women who have a greater risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer, and in developed countries like the USA, this can be as high as 1 in 8, are women who have a family history of cancer and particularly breast cancer.

There are different ways to detect breast cancer. Every woman should carry out a breast self-examination at least once a month. Any swelling or anything unusual should result in a visit to her doctor. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast and such an examination is able to pick up almost all tumors even if quite small. Catching the tumor in its infancy is vital in the successful treatment of the disease. The two methods are both essential with the self-examination being far more regular than the mammogram. Health authorities recommended all women under 40 have a least one mammogram and once into their 40s to have an annual mammogram.

Young women need to be aware that there is usually a thicker layer of glandular breast tissue and this can screen or hide a possible tumor. An ultrasound is capable of penetrating the dense breast tissue and is used to screen for any cancer. It can see specific areas and pick up matter which a mammogram may miss.

Any woman from a high-risk area such as a family history with breast cancer should consider medical examinations like a mammogram every six months as opposed to once a year. Consult your doctor for advice on your timetable.

In summary there is no definite way to prevent breast cancer. There are ways to reduce the risk and there are simple and powerful ways to detect any cancer. And better still, treatments continue to improve as well.

Early Detection of Breast Cancer Means High Survival Rates

Aug 20
2010

Breast cancer is probably one of the most emotional types of cancers for women, but it is not only women that can get breast cancer. Of course, most cases of breast cancer are from female patients.

The trick to breast cancer is catching it early on and most women can catch it by finding a lump in one of their breasts, but not all lumps are cancer, most are not. Still this is why a woman needs to immediately check it out just in case.

When women catch breast cancer early on, before the cancer reaches the lymph nodes, the cancer is usually cured. Better yet over 80% of the women treated at this point are still alive and enjoying life well over ten years later.

So, breast cancer is not something to get depressed over, rather it is a challenge that must be faced head on to win. Many women after surviving breast cancer tell of a much happier life having defeated it.

Even after the cancer spreads the survival rates do exist with decent odds, and it is not a death sentence at all. So, it behooves women who feel lumps inside their breasts to go get them checked as soon as possible. The larger the lump the more chance that it has spread to the lymph nodes.

Thus, if a woman feels such a lump early on, a small one, she can easily get it taken care of and enjoy the incredibly high survival rates. Please, if you are woman check your breasts just to be on the safe side, early detection and treatment is your friend.

Avoiding Breast Cancer

Aug 18
2010

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer begins when malignant cells develop in the tissue of the breast. The mere thought of breast cancer is every woman’s nightmare. It is the one area, we as women, can all come together and help each other stay informed. While there is no cure…yet. There are ways that we may be able to decrease our chances of getting breast cancer. I have tried to avoid rumors and wives tails in this breast cancer prevention article….that is why you will not see the bra, antiperspirant and other UNPROVEN rumors in this article.

Please note…I do not under ANY circumstances claim that these tips WILL prevent breast cancer. I am simply saying that these tips have been shown that they MAY help prevent breast cancer.

Tips to Avoid and/or Catch Breast Cancer Early.

Early detection is key to surviving breast cancer if it is your cross to bear. So, PLEASE perform a weekly/monthly self breast exam (see directions below). Go for a yearly breast exam and regular mammograms after age 50. These simple steps can make a world of difference!

Other things that may help prevent breast cancer all together…

* limit alcohol

* exercise at least 30 minutes a day/5 days a week

* stay at a healthy wait and avoid obesity

* maintain a low fat diet

* eat more raw fruits and veggies (at least 5 a day). Especially, cruciferous veggies like; cabbage, broccoli, kale, and brussel sprouts. Studies have shown that they may help stop the growth of breast cancer cells

* eat or drink acai juice (product can be found here) may help prevent cancer. A University of Florida Study showed that it can kill cancer cells. (see article here)

* limit red meats and processed meats in your diet

* get plenty of vitamin D (fortified milk, yogurt and cheese)

* eat more curcumin. Curcumin is found in turmeric and curry powder. It may be able to help protect against breast cancer tumor development

* limit refined sugars

* avoid using post-menopausal hormone therapy (PHT)

* drink more teas, especially green tea may decrease your risk of developing breast cancer

The above tips are all great tips to maintaining a healthy lifestyle apart from breast cancer. However, they also MAY be able to help us avoid this horrible disease all together.

Do You Use Paraben Free Facial Moisturizers and Skin Products? You Should!

Aug 08
2010

Paraben free facial moisturizers and other skin products without parabens are now widely available on the market. Do you know why you should use paraben free facial moisturizers?

Parabens are commonly used preservatives in skin care products. It extends the shelf life of products and it acts as a bactericidal and fungicidal agent. There are many types of parabens like methylparaben, propylparaben, and ethylparaben. Each one has its own purpose but these are commonly used as preservatives not only for skin care products but in other products as well like pharmaceuticals, shampoos, and toothpastes.

Findings on studies done about parabens revealed that it can cause several harmful health effects. It can mimic the body’s hormones which in turn can disrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system. It can also affect the reproductive system. It can also cause skin reactions like skin rashes, allergies, and irritation.

The most alarming thing about parabens, however, is the finding of the presence of this harmful chemical in the breast tissues of 18 out of 20 patients with breast cancer which suggests that it can lead to the development of cancer, specifically cancer of the breast.

Parabens are easily absorbed when applied to the skin. Once it is absorbed, it gets into the bloodstream and can be detected in blood tests just a short while after application of a product with parabens.

Using paraben free facial moisturizers and other products can help keep you safe from these harmful health effects. Of course, it’s not just parabens that you have to avoid. You also have to avoid other chemicals like alcohol, fragrances, dioxanes, and mineral oil. Artificial preservatives should be avoided as well.

If you truly care about your skin, make sure that you use only natural skin care products. Natural ingredients are safer and more effective than chemical and synthetic ones. These also do not pose a risk on your health. There are a lot of natural ingredients that are proven to be effective when it comes to skin care. Examples of such as cynergy TK, shea butter, and babassu wax.

Cynergy TK is a type of bioactive keratin that stimulates the body to produce more collagen and elastin. It helps smoothen and firm up the skin. Shea butter works well as a moisturizer and offers sun protection. Babassu wax acts as an invisible barrier against external factors like dirt and pollution and helps keep moisture in the skin.

Using paraben free moisturizers and other natural skin products are best for your skin and your health. Give your skin the best care by choosing natural. Visit my site today to find out what other natural ingredients should be your skin and body care products.
